Nontoxic Baby Swing
When I was pregnant with my son I wanted to make sure I found a nontoxic baby swing which proved to be way harder than I thought. There are so many toxic chemicals in baby products it’s actually shocking! Sadly, there are not many options for baby swings that are totally non-toxic. I did tons of research and could only find 3 truly nontoxic options. I’ll tell you all about each and the one we picked.
Toxic materials and compounds to lookout for:
Flame Retardants
Formeldehyde
PVC
POV
Polyurthane Foam
BPA
The Best Nontoxic Baby Swings
Nuna Leaf
This is the swing we chose and my top pick for a nontoxic baby swing.
Pros:
All models (even the older ones) have:
- No batteries or electronic components. You just tap it and the swing sways for about 2 minutes.
- Has a natural swaying motion that’s great for soothing your baby
- Maximum weight limit is 130 lbs so it has a much longer lifespan for your baby than most other swings. I’ve read that toddlers still love to sit and rock themselves in the swing.
- The seat is GOTS certified organic fabric
- It’s washable! The entire fabric insert comes off and can be thrown in the wash. I wash mine in the washer and then hang it to dry and it’s still in great condition
The newer Nuna Leaf Grow also has:
- A removeable harness so that the swing transitions into a toddler seat.
- 3 different recline positions
Cons:
- I love that it doesn’t have batteries or cords, but this means you have to tap it every 2 minutes to keep it swinging. This could be inconvenient if you’re trying to get something done or if the swing isn’t sitting within reach.
- It’s not very portable. The base is pretty heavy which is great for safety and stability but not great for carrying it around the house especially up and down the stairs. We usually leave ours right in the living room.
Bloom Co Baby Lounger
Pros:
- Beautiful modern wood design. This is definitely a statement piece.
- It’s all natural and made with sustainable solid baltic bentwood.
- Made using only baby-safe low voc paints and stains
- Self rocking – it moves when baby moves without any batteries or cords. You can also gently rock it yourself.
- Cotton pad facing baby
- No flame retardants or polyurthane foam is used
- You can buy additional seat covers including an option that is 100% merino wool
Cons
- Not easily portable
- Weight limit is 25 lbs, which is average for a baby swing but lower than the Nuna Leaf
- Not a true swing – this is more of a rocker than a swing
- The rear of the cotton pad is polyester (the back side that doesn’t touch the baby)
Bloom Coco Go 3 in 1 Bouncer
Pros:
- It’s a bouncer, rocker, and
- Ultra portable and light weight. It even comes with a durable carrying bag.
- The fabric that touches baby is all organic
- Free of lead, BPA, phthalates, PVC, formeldehyde, & flame retardants.
- Has a 5 point harness making it extra safe
- Machine washable seat pad
- 3 different seat positions
- The base is made of natural birchwood
Cons
- Not a true swing, it’s more of a rocker and bouncer
- The weight limit is 25 lbs which is comparable to other baby swings, but low compared to the Nuna Leaf.
- The back of the seat pad is polyester (the side that doesn’t touch baby)
- It needs to be manually rocked or bounced, the batteries are only for the 2 vibrating settings
Baby Bjorn Bouncer
Although this is not a swing, I had to throw it in here as a bonus because it’s my number one pick for new parents. We’ve loved our baby bjorn bouncer from the time our son was a newborn. It’s one of his favorite places to sit and I really love everything about it. If you’re ok with a nontoxic baby bouncer instead of a nontoxic baby swing I highly recommend this one!
Pros:
- It’s super lightweight and portable. We bring it with us back and forth from our house to our cottage. It’s also super easy to move from room to room around the house
- The entire fabric seat comes off and is machine washable. We’ve washed our covers multiple times and it’s still in perfect condition.
- You can buy additional covers. We have a second one so we can continue using it even when one cover is in the laundry.
- No batteries or cords – you can bounce it yourself (I like to bounce it with my foot) or baby can bounce it themselves when they move.
- OEKO-TEX certified
- When your baby outgrows the bouncer (max 20 lbs) you can turn the seat around and they can continue using it as a chair up to 29 lbs
- 3 different recline positions
- Folds completely flat for easy storage so it’s great for small spaces.
Cons:
- It’s on the expensive side and you have to buy accessories such as extra seat covers or a toy bar separately.
- Either you or baby has to bounce the bouncer since it doesn’t have batteries or a power cord.
I know when you’re buying mostly nontoxic products for your baby it starts to add up fast! I always recommend checking Facebook marketplace or your local buy/sell group to see if you can find a nontoxic baby swing (or bouncer) at a discount. That’s where I was able to get both my Nuna Leaf and my Baby Bjorn Bouncer. You can also check GoodBuyGear for secondhand products.
